What does it take to become a female GM?
To become a General Manager takes dedication. The business we are in is 365 days a year and 24/7. It never stops. To be successful you must not only be a manager but a leader. Most people are capable of managing but not all of getting teams on board and taking them on a journey. To be a leader you must literally practice what you preach, have a respected, proven track record and excellent communication and listening skills. I always felt coming through the ranks that I had to work harder as a female to earn the respect. Things have changed since then which is positive, but one must always perform strongly in such a senior role.
What do you enjoy most about your current role?
The diverse nature of our business makes it exciting. You never know what will happen from one minute to the next. No matter how well planned and organised there is always something.
What do you think are the best ways to encourage and assist women to become leaders?
Not everyone wants to be a leader. Not everyone wants that ultimate responsibility. This is fine as long as whatever role and path you chose for your career, that you do it to your fullest potential. Work hard and diligently, tough but fair.
What advice would you give to the next generation of Accor’s female general managers?
Work hard; meet your targets and perform to the highest level possible. I would say this though to any individual that wanted to be successful, not just a female.
The last word – any other comments you’d like to make on diversity or being a female leader?
The more varied the pool of General Managers or leaders the more diverse opinions and ideas. A company succeeds by continually questioning and striving to always improve. Be a fair leader but firm as one always needs to push the boundaries in order to grow.
